About me

I am working primarily as choreographer, art director, dramaturg, interdisciplinary theatre artist. In my life I did learn, practiced, performed and experienced many different dance and theatre art disciplines, improvisation , dance , theatre, installation , performance, stage combat, acting, partnering, contact improvisation etc.. I have studied 6 years in Latvian Academy of culture - dance academy in Riga, still returning there now and then as a guest lecturer.

I love to learn, merge, puzzle things new, create, recreate.

So in the moment I am gathering expertise also in video shooting, editing, media art, projections , projection mapping. And working in this fields professionally. Mainly in dance, theatre and visual arts, documentary.

Janis Putnins is a dance theater and video artist from Latvia, currently based in Freiburg, Germany. In 2015, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Choreography, followed by a Master of Arts in Contemporary Dance Art and Dramaturgy. He choreographed the production “FACE T(W)O” as part of the Creative Europe project “People, Power, Partnership” (www.people-power-partnership.eu), as well as various dance pieces in Germany and Latvia, such as “SACRE” and “IMPRINT.” Among his latest work is performances like Dido and Aeneas, (contemporary opera 2023) as well as EMPREINTE (dance theatre performance with live text 2024) , intergenerational dance theatre project “heimat:en” (2024).

In 2019, Janis Putnins participated in the “MELT” dance camp and creative residency in New York and performed at Judson Church. Since the start of his studies in 2011, he has been creating and performing alongside renowned musicians, on television, at the Latvian National Opera, and in several national and independent theaters.

In addition to working with professional artists, a large part of his work involves cultural education and creating with non-professional participants, as seen in projects like “SATEKA” and “DEJO DEJO DEJO.” For the past two years, he has been focusing on video and projection art, and was responsible for the projections and their mapping in “SACRE” and “face t(w)o.” His latest video installation, “CIPHA” (commissioned by the Freiburg Department of Culture), December 2023. Janis’ artistic interests extend beyond professional dance and theater art to social engagement and site-specific theater. He is dedicated to making the arts accessible to a wide range of communities and engaging audiences in unconventional spaces through video art, choreography, and participatory productions.
